Foods that Contain - Artificial Coloring



You can find artificial coloring in a variety of food products and even in some medications. Artificial coloring can be found up and down our supermarkets and store aisles all around the United States - but did you know that many countries outside the United States have banned or have restrictions on selling Artificial Coloring to their consumers? Artificial coloring are synthetic food dyes (A.K.A Additives) used to create color to foods, medications and also in some cosmetics.


There has been a widespread of public concern that Artificial Coloring has an affect on children and may cause hyperactivity, mood swings, and other behavioral issues, and worsening the behavior in children with ADHD after consuming synthetic food dyes.


Not all food coloring are bad to consume. Here is a list of natural flavors that are not synthetic dyes and are more of a healthier option


  • Annatto

  • Carrot juice

  • Beet juice

  • Paprika

  • Turmeric

  • Elderberry juice

  • Caramel Color


Coloring that you should not consume and to watch out for


  • Blue 1, 2

  • Red 40

  • Yellow 5, 6

  • Green 3

  • Any ingredient that have a color and number



Foods that Contain - High Fructose Corn Syrup



Like Artificial coloring , High fructose Corn syrup (HFCS) can be found in all of our supermarkets and store aisles, and in most of our comfort foods. It is also banned and or have restrictions in countries outside the United states. High fructose corn syrup is a common sweetener made from corn starch used to sweeten foods.


There have also been wide public concerns about the consumption of HFCS. It has been linked to a variety of health concerns, such as, hyper activity, mood swings, type 2 diabetes, cancer, heart disease and a host of other health issues. You can find HFCS in a lot of our every day foods and beverages. So the next time you go to the store and pick up groceries take a look at the ingredients and you will probably see a good majority of foods that contain HFCS.



Note: The good news it that a lot of companies have been eliminating Artificial coloring and High Fructose Corn Syrup from their ingredients, and you will notice more labels with the caption "Contains no high fructose syrup or artificial coloring" or "No additives or preservatives" on the product label. However not all brands have changed or eliminated these ingredients out of their products. So it is very important that you read the ingredients in back before you purchase it .

  • Pies

  • Cakes

  • Frosting

  • Rice

  • Soda / Juice

  • Apple Sauce

  • meat/ Cold Cuts (dyes used to make meat look fresh)

  • Candy

  • Ketchup

  • Syrup

  • Potato chips

  • Cheese Doodles

  • Toothpaste

  • Mouthwash

  • Cough drops/ Lozenges

  • Children Fever medicine

  • Some prescriptions

  • Jelly

  • seasonings

  • Cereals

  • Oatmeal


Note: You can still consume everything on this list. different brands have different ingredients and some brands have both with and without these ingredients. When purchasing the above foods, it good to look for words like "organic, " Natural flavors , "No additives and preservatives". With medication look for the "Dye Free" label
